Biography

With over four decades of experience, Norm is one of Manitoba’s most prominent practitioners of family law. He guides clients through all aspects of family transition, including separation and divorce, custody matters, child and spousal support and family property accountings and division. Norm assists clients with investment portfolios, family businesses, trust structures and other complex holdings impacted by a change in a family situation.

Norm is qualified to resolve settlements through a collaborative law process. He is also experienced in family law litigation in a courtroom setting and a variety of arbitration or alternative dispute resolution practices. Norm has been trained in mediation and has completed the National Family Law Arbitration Course. He can conduct both mediations and arbitrations. He was qualified to give expert opinion in relation to a family law matter by the Manitoba Court of King's Bench (Civil Division). 

A significant contributor to the well-being of the legal profession, Norm was a member of the Manitoba Lawyer Assistance Program fostered by the Manitoba Bar Association, and he has been appointed by the Law Society of Manitoba to conduct practice reviews of other lawyers. Norm sat on the Law Society of Manitoba President’s Special Committee on Regulating Legal Entities and he is on the board of Family Arbitration and Mediation Institute Inc. (FAMLI), an association of lawyers and other professionals dedicated to helping individuals and families resolve their family law disputes outside the Court system through mediation and/or arbitration.

He has instructed at the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba and he regularly lectures for Community Legal Education Association (CLEA). He currently sits on the board of CLEA and is a former board member of Legal Aid Manitoba, the Board of Jewish Education, Northwest Child and Family Services and the Children’s Foundation of Winnipeg.

Norm and a close-knit group of Robson Hall alumni who graduated in 1980 created a bursary for Indigenous law students attending the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba which will become available in the fall of 2023.
