Community

When you need someone committed to you, and your community.

Fillmore Riley has a long legacy of civic duty and volunteerism. As Manitobans, we proudly live, work, sponsor, volunteer and donate time and resources to worthy causes and professional associations.

On an annual basis, Fillmore Riley contributes to more than a dozen charitable organizations in addition to the ones highlighted below. These examples are important to us, but the best reflections of our stake in our community as legal professionals are the hundreds of hours Fillmore Riley lawyers devote each year to legal advice and representation for community groups, charities and individuals in need of assistance.

CancerCare Manitoba

We are a significant and longtime supporter of CancerCare Manitoba. Since 2010, our firm has participated in and sponsored the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation’s flagship fundraiser, Challenge for Life. In that time, our team — Motion to Strike Cancer — has raised and contributed over $700,000 in support of cancer research, prevention, early detection, clinical trials and support services in Manitoba.

In addition to our financial commitment and providing legal services, Fillmore Riley lawyers have supported CancerCare Manitoba’s work as sitting board members.

United Way

The firm holds an employee fundraising drive to encourage donations to the United Way. Our annual two-week campaign increases awareness of the community agencies that the United Way sponsors. Year-over-year, we exceed our fundraising targets.

FortWhyte Alive

Underserved youth from Winnipeg’s core areas are engaged in sustainable agriculture, animal husbandry, food handling, and production and marketing skills. This benefits individual and community health, increases the youth’s employability in the diverse food industry in Manitoba, and strengthens the local food economy.

Our sponsorship covers the placement of the “Fillmore Riley Intern” throughout July and August. Our sponsorship dollars are also directed to FortWhyte Farms’ and FortWhyte Alive’s commitment to truth and Reconciliation by supporting annual workshops with Indigenous knowledge keepers at the farm and FortWhyte Alive. These workshops are delivered to FortWhyte Farms’ summer youth and farm staff at the onsite Medicine Garden.

Jody Langhan, K.C., Executive Chair of Fillmore Riley, served as Chair and Past-Chair of the FortWhyte Alive Board of Trustees. Our firm also made a significant contribution to FortWhyte Alive’s capital campaign in 2023 to support the construction of Buffalo Crossing.

Winnipeg Humane Society

The firm sponsors the Humane Society’s annual Bow Wow Ball and multiple lawyers have served on the organization’s board.

During Fillmore Riley CEO & Managing Partner Stuart Blake, K.C.'s tenure as President of the Winnipeg Humane Society, he spearheaded a capital campaign to build the 40,000 square-foot facility. The leading-edge facility, located on Hurst Way, opened its doors in 2007.

Winnipeg Arts Scene

Fillmore Riley is a keen supporter of Winnipeg’s vibrant arts scene. We have been a longtime supporter of Royal MTC as a sponsor of the Fillmore Riley Vacation Prize associated with Royal MTC’s Black and White Ball.

We also support the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra as a sponsor of the New Music Festival, one of Canada’s premier cultural events dedicated to contemporary art and the largest of its kind in the country.

Winnipeg Sports Scene

Since the team’s inaugural season in 2023, Fillmore Riley has been proud to be the “Official Law Firm” of the Winnipeg Sea Bears of the Canadian Elite Basketball League. The Sea Bears embody a rich history of basketball in Manitoba, and they have earned an exuberant and dedicated fan base since their inception, thanks to their organizational excellence.

Fillmore Riley has also been a longtime supporter of the Winnipeg Goldeyes as the sponsor of the Winnipeg Goldeyes Field of Dreams Foundation’s K’s for Kids initiative.

Robson Hall

The firm supports the University of Manitoba’s law school by sponsoring an annual negotiation competition and our lawyers devote countless hours volunteering as judges and as guest lecturers. We also created the Fillmore Riley Endowment Fund to offer assistance to students following graduation from the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba. The objective of the award is to provide students with debt relief on personal bank loans or lines of credit incurred to support their legal studies at Robson Hall.
