Sofia Mirza takes office as President of the Manitoba Bar Association.
The team at Fillmore Riley LLP congratulates Sofia Mirza on her new role as President of the Manitoba Bar Association (MBA) which took effect September 1, 2014.
Sofia is a cross border / business immigration partner at Fillmore Riley LLP. Early on as an associate, Sofia carved out her own career path and developed a successful immigration practice at the firm. Her initiative and leadership skills are also evident in her long-term involvement with the Manitoba branch of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) at the provincial and national level. Most recently, Sofia served as Vice-President of MBA and Chair of its Immigration Section serving on its National Executive as well. In August 2014, she was re-elected to continue her work on the National Executive of the CBA Immigration Section.
As President of the MBA, Sofia will serve as a member of the CBA Board of Directors. Along with the MBA executive, she will assist in providing leadership and direction as a voice of the legal profession on issues of concern to the profession including access to justice, participate in legislation and law reform initiatives, policy debate, setting the media record straight when necessary, and defending the judiciary and judicial independence. Throughout her year-long term as president, she will continue to practise law.
