Childhood cancer on high alert at Fillmore Riley.

In addition to participating in the Dragon Boat Races this weekend in support of the CancerCare Manitoba and Children’s Hospital Foundations, Fillmore Riley has declared today a casual day to support an awareness campaign called Courage Rocks On.

Courage Rocks On is the brainchild of a Winnipeg mother whose son, Aleksei, was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma of the spine. The goal of this grassroots initiative is to put Ewing's Sarcoma in the spotlight.

Because Ewing’s Sarcoma most often targets children and teenagers, aches and pains are sometimes mistaken for growing pains. If caught before it has metastasized, the disease is treatable.

Fillmore Riley is just one of the Winnipeg businesses that has chosen to support the awareness campaign by selecting a day in which employees wear Courage Rocks On t-shirts, disseminate cards with information about Ewing’s Sarcoma, and talk about the disease.

The day resonated with everyone at Fillmore Riley because one of the partner’s children was affected by Ewing’s Sarcoma. At a gathering in the lunchroom, Stuart Blake gave a moving account of how his daughter, Alex, fought a battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma.

“Alex is doing very well now,” Stuart says. “It’s because my wife takes our daughter for an annual physical that the disease was caught in time. Listen to your children when they tell you about aches and pains.”
