Sofia Mirza nominated for YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Award.
The team at Fillmore Riley LLP congratulates Sofia Mirza, an immigration law partner, on her nomination for a YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Award in the category of Community Activism and Social Enterprise.
This award recognizes women who demonstrate dedication to the advancement of economic, environmental and social equity through advocacy and activism, which skills find expression through strong leadership, community-based projects, or collective action. These women strive to achieve positive social justice goals through outreach, education, and community building and other initiatives that positively impact the community in demonstrable ways.
“We are proud of Sofia,” says managing partner Glen Peters. “She started up the immigration department at Fillmore Riley and has created a niche practice. She is also a tireless volunteer and has made many significant contributions to the legal profession through her work with the Manitoba and Canadian Bar Associations.”
Sofia is currently the President of the Manitoba Bar Association (MBA). She has been a voice of the legal profession, inspiring others to dedicate their time to the public interest by ensuring her colleagues run for leadership positions in the MBA. Some of Sofia's achievements include participating in legislation and law reform initiatives such as lobbying for changes to modernize family law legislation.
Sofia is also a champion in her practice area of immigration law. She is often selected by her peers nationally and provincially to speak to changes and outline gaps in the law, including representing the CBA's National Immigration Law Section on resolutions.
“It is an honour to have been nominated for this award. I could not have accomplished everything without the support of the firm,” says Sofia. “Our firm has a strong track record of volunteerism. Giving back to the community is a part of Fillmore Riley’s culture.”
The YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Awards Gala is an inspirational and exciting celebration of talent, achievement, imagination and innovation, honouring Manitoba women who have made a unique and exemplary contribution to the development of others and to their community.
