Fillmore Riley’s lawyers to moderate and present at the MBA 2015 Mid-Winter Meeting.

Held from January 22 to 24, The MBA’s 2015 Mid-Winter Conference is the Manitoba Bar Association’s premier event of the year. Fillmore Riley is proud that a number of our lawyers will be participating in the conference in various capacities.

Fillmore Riley’s Anita Southall will participate as a speaker in the session Surviving and Thriving in Private Practice: Tips from Women from the Frontlines. The session offers an update on efforts to retain and advance women in private practice together with a roundtable discussion centered on marketing for women including tips from top female practitioners on best personal marketing practices.

Bernice Bowley will participate as a speaker in The Court of Appeal: A Discussion of Appellate Practice for Civil Appeals. The session will look at a variety of issues which commonly arise during the course of a civil appeal including a discussion on standard of review, factums, and oral submissions.

Johanna Caithness will participate as a speaker in Advising the Farmer: Get the Dirt on the Dirt. The session will include a review of tax considerations specific to farmers and farms, including tax deferred rollovers, the lifetime capital gains exemption, the principal residence exemption and tax issues with respect to the purchase and sale of farm property.

Kathryn Hordienko, in her capacity as Co-Chair of the MBA Labour Section, will moderate the panel Restrictive Covenants in Employment Law: Perspective for the Bar and Bench and Curran McNicol will participate as a speaker in the same session. This session will address non-solicitation and non-competition restrictive covenants in the context of labour/employment law in Canada.

Iain McDonald helped make the event happen as a member of  the 2015 Mid-Winter Organizing Committee.

“As President of the MBA, I am pleased to see so many members of the legal community, including lawyers, the judiciary and academics, take an active role in the conference. As a partner at Fillmore Riley LLP, I am very proud that so many of my colleagues will present or moderate,” said Sofia Mirza.
