Fillmore Riley congratulates the Legal Help Centre (LHC) on opening its doors to the public. LHC is located in MacNamara Hall North, 380 Spence Street, on the UW campus.
LHC, a joint initiative of the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba, arose, in part, out of the findings from a 2008 report of the United Nations’ Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor.
Students from both campuses and volunteer lawyers help people in financial need access legal and social services through a drop in clinic which provides referrals to other community resources or appointments with volunteer lawyers who can provide legal assistance. In addition LHC offers a series of workshops for persons who are representing themselves in family or small claims proceedings.
“The mandate of the Legal Help Centre is to assist economically disadvantaged members of our community to access and exercise their legal and social rights. The Centre is not intended to duplicate any existing service available, but to fill a gap for those in need,” explains Executive Director Karen Dyck.
Fillmore Riley is proud to be one of the many law firms that supports this project. Fillmore has provided financial assistance and a number of Fillmore lawyers have donated their time or have signed up as volunteers to work at LHC. Sofia Mirza has assisted in the preparation of the legal resource guide on immigration law and has agreed to be available to LHC volunteers to answer specific immigration law questions.
Johanna Caithness, Anita Southall and Eleanor Wiebe assisted in the preparation of the legal resource guide on Wills and Estates. Both Paul Grower and Jason Roberts have volunteered as lawyers at LHC to provide advice directly to its clients.
“This is a unique and worthy project, deserving of support by the legal profession as well as our community,” says Eleanor Wiebe, who is an advisor to the board of LHC.
