Areas of Focus
Derek is a partner of Fillmore Riley LLP, practicing in the area of corporate commercial law, with a focus on transactions and matters involving technology and intellectual property. Derek is also a member of Fillmore Riley LLP’s banking law, real estate law, taxation law and wills, estates and trusts law practice groups. Derek represents major corporations, small and medium sized businesses, financial institutions, non-profit organizations, early stage technology companies, franchisors and franchisees, inventors and entrepreneurs in these areas of practice.

Representative transactions include mergers and acquisitions, real property development, purchase, sale and leasing transactions, secured debt financing and securities placements, franchising, patent, trade-mark, trade secret and copyright licensing and protection, proprietary manufacturing, software and web site development, e-commerce transactions, high tech employment and non-disclosure agreements.

Derek has lectured on corporate commercial, intellectual property and privacy matters for several professional associations including Entrepreneurs Organization, Canadian Association of Financial Planners, the Isaac Pitblado Lecture Series, the Manitoba Bar Association and the Law Society of Manitoba. He has authored papers on various aspects of intellectual property and corporate commercial law.

Derek is a Director of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba and a member of its Institute Development Committee.

Derek is the Chairman of Fillmore Riley LLP’s Technology Department.

Derek joined Fillmore Riley in 1992 as an articling student and became a partner in 2000.
